Yasmin Mello
Dance Artist
About
I am a Brazilian Dublin-based dance-theatre director, performer, writer, producer, researcher and educator interested in making interdisciplinary work combining dance, theatre, storytelling and film. I am interested in investigating ways to tell stories through surreal visual images and Poetic Movement exploring themes of myth, migration and memory.
In 2023 I was mentored by Feidlim Cannon of Brokentalkers & Tonya Sheina through a Dance Bursary Award to research & develop a dance-theater piece called When Night Gave Birth - supported by DanceIreland, Echo Echo Dance Company & Axis Ballymun. This piece is an ongoing project inspired by a series of interviews I hosted with the women in my family which has been the fuel to create a a fairytale-like story playing on memory and imagination.
As professional artist I believe on the importance of always being in a constant learning process and open to sharing knowledge to people. Since the start of my artist career I have been keen on developing my tools, methodologies and learning and teaching strategies weather be it through my academic pursuits or through my professional development courses.
Sharing is a strong mark in my practice and since 2022 I have also been facilitating Open Practice workshops for local artists of all backgrounds with Selma Daniel in Meath and we are currently co-curating Meath Move Gathering - a celebration of dance at the Solstice Arts Centre.
I am also deeply interested in deepening the relationship between audiences and professional artists of all backgrounds and desire to continue to work towards a more collaborative and community driven environment in the arts through shared experience, education and performance.
